2 Delhi Congress leaders resign over party's alliance with AAP
Former MLAs Neeraj Basoya and Naseeb Singh have resigned from the Congress, expressing their opposition to the party's alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Both leaders were also observers for two Lok Sabha seats in Delhi. Their resignations were submitted to party president Mallikarjun Kharge just days after Delhi Congress president Arvinder Singh Lovely resigned from his post.
Why does this story matter?
Basoya and Singh, Lovely have cited the same reason for their resignations, which is the alliance with the AAP for the Lok Sabha elections in Delhi. Under the alliance, the Congress will contest three of the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi, while the the AAP will contest four. While Lovely has said that he will not join any other party as of now, the political future of the other two leaders remain unclear.
Basoya expresses discontent over AAP alliance
In his resignation letter, Basoya said that the party's continued alliance with the AAP is "extremely humiliating." "The top 3 leaders of the AAP...Arvind Kejriwal, Satyendar Jain and Manish Sisodia are already in jail. The AAP has been accused of serious corruption charges on various issues such as the Delhi Liquor Scam and Delhi Jal Board Scam," stated Basoya. He further stated that this partnership was causing daily "great disrepute and embarrassment" to Delhi Congress workers.
Singh resigns over appointment of New Delhi Congress chief
Similary, Singh said he is deeply pained and humiliated at the recent developments in the party. "Aam Aadmi Party, which ended the Congress and talked about putting Sheila Dikshit in jail, today our party is sitting in the lap of the same party. The one who talked about putting Sheila Dikshit in jail is now in jail themselves," he wrote in his resignation letter. He also expressed his discontent over Devender Yadav's appointment as Delhi Congress chief following Lovely's resignation.
