Man calls woman "chammak challo"; gets imprisoned
Thane Magistrate Court convicted a Ghodbunder Road resident for insulting a woman using the word "chammak challo" in 2009. He was found guilty under IPC Section-509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman). However, he was awarded a simple sentence of imprisonment till rising of the court (until court proceedings for the day are over) and fined Re. 1.
What did the judge say?
"The words 'chammak challo' are Hindi words. These words are to be understood in Indian society by their use. Generally, they are used to insult a woman. They are not words appreciating a woman. When used, they cause irritation to any woman," the judge said.
