Thane police arrests woman for trying to sell 5-year-old girl
The anti-human trafficking cell of Thane police arrested Shobha Gaikwad for trying to sell a five-year-old girl for Rs. 20,000 at Bhiwandi. 3 months ago, a woman from Gujarat gave away the girl to Gaikwad, as she considered her a hindrance to her marriage. Maharashtra plans to expand 'housing for all' scheme
In a bid to expand the Centre's 'housing for all' scheme, the Maharashtra government will soon be sending a proposal to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, requesting it to expand the scheme to the state's 385 cities and towns from the current lot of 142. The Maharashtra government had adopted the 'Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), in December 2015.
Ulhasnagar civic body announces reward for information on river polluters
Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) announced a reward of Rs. 10,000 for information on chemical tankers that illegally dispose-off waste in Waldhuni river,which has become a health hazard for locals. UMC will also install 13 CCTV cameras near the river in order to keep a watch on the mafia. Activist Satyajit Burman, who has been fighting against the river's pollution, welcomed the initiative.
Amidst public pressure, Mumbai Metro handles trees with care
Public pressure and tight monitoring by the Bombay HC are ensuring that Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited pursues its efforts of saving trees that have been marked for transplantation. Zoru Bathena, who accompanies court committee to proposed station and transplantation site said, "At Worli, a small tree was saved. At the domestic airport, a huge banyan tree marked for transplantation has been spared."
Mumbai: School staff forces students to shave their head
In a shocking incident, staff and the office assistant of a school in Vikhroli punished a group of 25 students for not getting their hair cut as told, by forcing them to shave their head. Post the incident, concerned parents registered a case regarding the issue with the Vikhroli police station. The staff of Vikhroli School has been booked for subjecting children to cruelty.
