Justin Bieber to land in Mumbai for debut India concert
Canadian pop star Justin Bieber will make his India debut in Mumbai on May 10, in what is being called the highest paid concert in the country yet. The DY Patil Stadium in Nerul will host the 22-year-old 'Baby' singer's concert that is estimated to cost $4 million. Tickets will be up for sale starting February 22. Bhiwandi Congress corporator shot dead, arm chopped off
Eight men shot dead Bhiwandi Congress corporator Manoj Mhatre in Oswal Wadi and chopped off an arm when he reached home at night. Mhatre was rushed to a nearby-hospital and was later shifted to Jupiter Hospital in Thane, where he died during treatment. Five attackers have been identified. Cops have launched a manhunt, and the Thane crime branch has also started a parallel investigation.
BEST bus mows down biker in Dharavi
In the second accident in two days involving BEST buses, a biker was run over in Koliwada locality at Dharavi when he was on his way to office. In a similar incident, a school bus mowed down a nine-year-old student in front of his mother when he was crossing a road to reach his home in Nerul. Both the drivers were arrested.
1,251 Pune women under 18 became mothers in 2016
According to a study by the Pune Municipal Corporation, 2,261 married girls in the city aged 15-19 consummated their marriage in 2016, and 1,251 of them became mothers. Another survey by an NGO revealed that 71% of the girls surveyed had gotten married before 18 years of age. Early marriage affects educational opportunities and health negatively, and increases vulnerability to domestic abuse.
Special trains from Mumbai to Jammu, Gorakhpur during Holi
Special trains will run between Mumbai and Gorakhpur and between Jammu and Mumbai to meet the surge in rush during Holi. The trains will travel via Thane, Itarsi, Jhansi, Lucknow, Gonda, Agra Cantonment, New Delhi, Ludhiana, Ambala Cantonment and Pathankot Cantonment. Officials say there is a high demand for trains on the Jammu route. Feasibility of running more trains is being examined.
NCP chief ready for mid-term polls, says won't support BJP
NCP President Sharad Pawar said his party is ready for mid-term polls, and announced it won't back the BJP if the Shiv Sena withdraws support to the Devendra Fadnavis government. However, Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray said there's no guarantee Pawar will stand by his words. Meanwhile, Congress welcomed the decision, with former union-minister Sushil Kumar Shinde saying it is also ready for mid-term polls.
Slash in funding for Mumbai start-ups
Mumbai, the birthplace of start-ups like Housing, recorded a decline of 44% in funding deals in 2016. However, despite a decline in big financing, angel and seed funding of Maharashtra start-ups touched a five-year high of 80%. Many organizations in Mumbai's start-up epicenter Powai shut operations, including TinyOwl. Investment in Pune, however, went up from $38.92 million in 2015 to $52.45 million in 2016.
