In a first, 200 electric taxis to run in Maharashtra
In a first in India, approximately 200 electric taxis will run in Maharashtra on 26th May. This project, a pet of Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, was undertaken by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation in collaboration with Ola cabs. Average Mumbaiite creates 7 times more e-waste than average Indian
According to data compiled by the NASSCOM Foundation, a non-profit organization collaborating with the Centre to spread awareness about e-waste, an average Mumbaikar produces 7 times more electronic waste than an average Indian. The data discloses that an average Mumbaiite produces 9.6kg e-waste, compared to an average Indian, which generates 1.49kg e-waste. E-waste includes old/broken electronic gadgets, phones, chargers, batteries, fax machines, copiers, etc.
India's first uterus transplant in Pune
On 18th May, doctors at a Pune hospital conducted India's first uterus transplant from a 44-year-old woman from Solapur into her 21-year-old daughter, who was born without a uterus. Doctors said it would take a month to ascertain if the surgery was a success. The donor's uterus was retrieved using minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgery, which reduced the surgery time from 12 to 9 hours.
Survey results compel railways to hire clean-up marshals
Railways in Mumbai plan to hire clean-up marshals to bring an end to littering and spitting on the railway stations. Currently, only stationmasters and ticket checkers can impose penalties for such behavior. This decision comes a day after Mumbai's major railway stations including CST, Dadar and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus showed a steep decline in their rankings in a nationwide cleanliness survey of railway stations.
Man rapes minors under pretext of planting trees
A 30-year-old man from Andheri east was arrested for allegedly raping two minor girls under the guise of seeking help to plant saplings. The two children-aged 9 and 13, were being raped since one month by being bribed for sweets and money for planting saplings. The accused, named Suraj Jaswar would do petty jobs at Goregaon's Film City, but was unemployed since 6 months.
New Tejas Train to reach CST on Saturday
On the afternoon of 18th May, India's first Tejas rake, a long-distance passenger train featuring advanced passenger comfort coupled with entertainment facilities, left Kapurthala's Rail Coach Factory (RCF). The train is expected to reach Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus on 20th May. The 20-coach train is expected to run 5 days a week between Mumbai-Karmali (Goa). The potential top speed of the train is 200kmph.
