Mumbai boy repeatedly stabs molester before escaping
A Class IV student of Deedee's Madrassa in Sewri repeatedly stabbed a teacher with a pen, who was trying to sodomize him, before escaping. The accused allegedly took the boy home forcefully and sexually assaulted him. The boy ran to his tuition teacher and informed him about the incident. The man has been booked. Pune hosts Davis Cup after 43 years
Pune is hosting the Davis Cup after 43 years, from February 3-5. The Davis Cup Asia/Oceania tie between New Zealand and India will take place at the Mahalunge Malewadi Sports Complex. Tickets to the event are being given out for free. Online ticketing system has also been introduced. Big names including Leander Paes, Uki Bhambri and Alistair Hunt will be seen in action.
Alert driver halts train inches away from woman on track
Motorman Santosh Kumar Gautam managed to halt a Churchgate-bound train at Charni Road station, just inches away from a woman on the track who, despite repeated honking, kept walking towards the train. Gautam had slowed down the train after crossing Grant Road as it was moving over a cross-over. The motorman and a few passengers then helped the woman up on to the platform.
Sociology textbook says 'ugly' women have to pay more dowry
A state board sociology textbook for Class XII says parents of 'ugly' and handicapped women find it hard to find grooms, so they have to pay more dowry. The chapter, titled 'Major Social Problems in India', also says dowry demand can be higher if the groom is from a higher caste. The chapter has been in place since the last three years.
Drastic spurt in crime by minors in Nashik
Nashik registered a 76% increase in juvenile crime in 2015-2016. Minors have been found to be involved in serious offences too, like murder, rape and arson. Most juvenile criminals are between 14-18 years of age. "Problem is police cannot arrest them [juveniles] or interrogate them in uniform," police officials said. Cops have reached out to schools and conduct regular patrolling to check unwanted incidents.
Biker decapitated in freak accident at Pimplewadi
26-year-old biker Mayur Devrukhkar was decapitated in a freak accident on the Mumbai-Goa Highway, when he rode through a snapped 22KV high-tension cable that had gotten entangled with a passing truck. The Sangameshwar resident was riding from Ratnagiri to his workplace in Chiplun when the mishap happened at Pimplewadi. Traffic was stopped for half an hour. An accidental death report has been filed.
Chaos at Gateway of India as BMC demolishes event venue
Procam International was about to announce the launch of Nexa P1 Powerboat, a three-day motorboat race, when BMC officials walked in with bulldozers and demolished the dais near Gateway of India. Officials said permission had not been granted for this event as the organizers had not cleared crores of pending dues from the Mumbai Marathon. Procam said it has appealed against the "added" charges.
