Building collapse: 10 dead, 15 injured in JJ Junction
A five-storied building in JJ Junction near Mumbai's Pakmodia Street collapsed around 8:30 AM today, claiming ten lives and injuring 15. About nine families were living in it which also had shops on ground-floor. National Disaster Response Force and fire-brigade teams are carrying out rescue operations; over 30 people are feared trapped. The over 100 years' old building was reportedly issued an eviction notice.
Suburban central and western train services delayed
Suburban commuters in Mumbai faced hassles as trains were running behind schedule. While the central train services on the main line and harbor line were delayed by 20-30 minutes, the western services were 10-15 minutes behind schedule. Some trains have also been canceled.
Heavy downpours clog Mumbai; angry citizens blame civic body
After torrential rains wrecked havoc in Mumbai, citizens and activists are venting their anger on Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM). They said that MCGM's "shoddy civic work" clogged the city, resulting in the submergence of railway tracks, waterlogged streets, and swamped houses, leaving thousands stranded on streets. Many angry citizens said "the country's richest civic body" failed them.
Bhendi Bazaar building collapse
Civic authorities suspect the incessant rains Mumbai received over the past few days have damaged the building that collapsed in Bhendi Bazaar. Mumbai Police said the area surrounding the collapsed building was cordoned off. BMC Commissioner Ajoy Mehta has visited the site.
Mumbai: Bombay Hospital doctor's body found near Worli seashore
As rains lashed Mumbai, Dr. Deepak Amarapukar, Bombay Hospital's 58-year-old senior gastroenterologist physician, went missing on 29 August. His body was recovered today morning near Worli seashore. He reportedly abandoned his car and the driver and starting walking to his house due to the waterlogged roads. Witnesses say they saw a person looking like Amrapurkar being washed away due to the heavy water flow.
Mumbai: 60-year-old dies of heart attack
A 60-year-old resident of Mumbai's Kharghar died of heart attack while wading through the flooded roads on 29 August. The suburban train he was traveling in stopped at Chunabatti due to heavy floods; he got down and started walking to his office at Masjid Bunder.
