India's first calf born through surrogacy in Pune farm
A healthy male Gir breed calf "Vijay" was delivered by a surrogate mother cow in Pune on 20 August. The calf born at Majid Pathan's farm is reportedly India's first through in vitro fertilization. Maharashtra: Helpline for protecting cattle transporters from cow vigilantes
The Bombay HC refused to issue guidelines for preventing "cow vigilantes" from taking law into their hands in Maharashtra. It said the state government took "adequate security measures" to ensure a safe Bakri Eid on 2 September. Maharashtra Police has set up 27 check-posts in the state and a 24x7 helpline-number 9503511100 in addition to 100 for protecting cattle transporters ahead of the festival.
Mumbai University to declare results by 31 August
Mumbai University (MU), after missing a series of deadlines for declaring results of all streams, informed the Bombay HC it is striving to announce the results by 31 August. A letter by MU Director of Examinations, Professor Dr Arjun Ghatule, was submitted to the court. The HC scheduled the further hearing of the matter for 31 August, expressing hope students' suffering will end.
Maharashtra educational institutes to enjoy more autonomy
At the inauguration ceremony of Progressive Education Society's educational institute in Maharashtra's Warje near Pune, CM Devendra Fadnavis said the government would grant more freedom to the state's educational sector. He said many global institutions could make their mark as they had autonomy. He added the same could be replicated in Maharashtra along with strict guidelines for maintaining high-quality of education.
Mumbai train derailment: High-level inquiry into accident ordered
After an Andheri-CSMT suburban train derailed near Mumbai's Mahim station on 25 August, a high-level Railways inquiry into the accident has been constituted under the Commissioner of Railway Safety. Six commuters were injured in the incident; officials say passengers who jumped off the train after it derailed got injured. Train services between Wadala and Andheri on Mumbai's Harbour line were interrupted.
3 dead in an accident in Maharashtra's Yavatmal
A horrific accident on the Umarkhed-Nanded road in Maharashtra's Yavatmal has claimed three lives. The three persons were killed as their car fell into a river after colliding with a truck. The deceased were identified as Inspector Dhyaneshwar Gote, his wife Ratna, and their driver.
Heavy rainfall recorded in Mumbai on Friday
On 25 August, several areas in Mumbai witnessed heavy rains for long durations. Between 8:30-20:30, India Meteorological Department's Colaba observatory recorded 31.2mm rainfall, while Santa Cruz observatory recorded 83.2mm. Waterlogging at Dadar's Hindmata and Sion Road no. 24 were reported due to which the movement of traffic was affected. BMC Disaster Management also received ten complaints about collapsing trees due to heavy rains.
