Alert Mumbai train drivers rewarded for averting major disaster
Driver Harendra Kumar of Janshatabdi Express, travelling from Madgaon to Dadar on January 24, saw a heavy piece of rail on the tracks near Diva. With the help of his 2 colleagues, the piece was removed. A case was registered under section 150-A of the Railways Act, 1989. Central Railway rewarded the three with cash. Citizens to 'patrol' through app ahead of BMC elections
The Maharashtra State Election Commission has launched the 'Citizen on Portal' app where people can anonymously report cases of cash-for-votes, paid news and other violations. A week ago, the SEC released the 'True Voter' app to check voters' info and track candidates' expenses. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections will be held on February 21 across 7,433 polling booths. Around 35,000 policemen will be deployed.
Traffic restrictions around Bandra flyover from Jan 27
The north-bound stretch of the Prabhodankar Thackeray flyover on the Western Express Highway in Bandra (East) will be closed from January 27 to 30 due to repairs. Two lanes will be open on the south-bound stretch for north-bound vehicles after 3 pm, and one for south-bound automobiles. "Counter lanes will be created on the flyover till 3 pm," said Sanjay Jadhav, DCP, traffic.
Leaders still undecided on Shiv Sena-BJP alliance
Shiv Sena strategists have urged party chief Uddhav Thackeray not to compromise on seat-sharing, saying BJP has more at stake over a possible alliance. However, a BJP leader said, "Although the Sena would be ready to leave 90-95 seats for us, the dispute would continue over the wards they wish to contest." An announcement was expected on January 26 after two weeks of talks.
Woman's naked body found at Kurla under-construction site
Police found the naked body of a woman at an under-construction building on Premier Road. She has been identified as Shantabai, who appeared to be a labourer. Rape is suspected, but police are awaiting the autopsy report. A murder case has been registered. In another case of sexual assault, a 23-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment for sodomizing a teenager in 2013.
Man arrested for brutally beating dog to death
Kishan Bagwat, a construction worker, and his colleagues were captured on CCTV beating a stray dog with bamboo sticks in a housing complex in Goregaon (West). Bagwat said the dog had bitten him, but activists said no bite marks were present on his body. "I urge citizens to at least call the police if they witness a crime," said animal rights activist Bhavin Gathani.
Mumbai church encourages burials without coffins
In the wake of decreasing space for coffins, the Archdiocese of Bombay has spoken out for shroud burials. The Catholic Communication Centre has released and is promoting a video on the advantages of shroud burials. "Being buried in a coffin is a Western concept. Shroud burials are eco-friendly, provide an alternative option to non-degradable wooden coffins, and take up less space," said Father Barrett.
