Rename railway station names with colonial imprints: Shiv Sena
On Tuesday, the Shiv Sena sought the renaming of 5 of Mumbai's railway stations, suggesting that they all have colonial imprints. Arvind Sawant, a member of Shiv Sena said that the Mumbai Central station should be renamed after Jagannath Shankar Seth, known for his contribution towards Victoria Terminus (now CST) station. Sustained losses leave BEST employees without salaries
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation controlled BEST is currently facing a cash crunch due to slipping revenues and sustained losses. The employees haven't received their salaries for the month of March; they're paid their salaries on the 10th of every month. According to reports, the BEST management is in talks with Canara Bank to raise money in order to pay its employees.
India's oldest economics department rechristened
Bombay School of Economics, the oldest Economics department in the country will now be known as the Mumbai School of Economics and Public Policy. In 1921, it was just one of the departments of Mumbai University; now, it plans to augment its course-offerings. According to the Department's director, centres for applied economic research and training, public policy and quantitative finance will be set up.
South Mumbai sees cops lax in solving cases
According to data, less than 65% of house break-ins, theft and robbery cases were solved by the police department. Out of 4,385 such cases reported in 2016, arrests were made only in 2,790. However, according to the police, the number of cases registered in South Bombay have decreased from 2015; patrolling too, has been upped. Out of these, theft was the most common crime.
Thane Municipal Transport launches mobile app
Meenakshi Shinde, the Mayor of Thane on Tuesday inaugurated a live tracking system for TMT buses called 'whereismytmtbus.' This app will not only update commuters about buses for their destinations, but also provide an expected time of arrival, nearest bus stop and the fare for the route. The app also extends facilities like booking tickets and renewing bus passes for commuters.
Pathetic services, but BMC sits on crores of Rupees
According to reports, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has altogether stored approximately Rs. 61,510crore in fixed-deposits in 31 banks (including 4 private banks) as of 31st January, 2017. According to the average interest rate of 7.41%, the annual interest for the fixed deposit comes up to Rs. 4,500crore. Despite being cash rich, the civic services and infrastructure offered by BMC have deteriorated over time.
