One dies after falling off crowded Mumbai local
Two men fell off an overcrowded Virar-Borivali local near Vasai. Irfan Shaikh died while Vikas Prajapati was grievously injured. Prajapati's wife heard a commotion when they fell off, tried calling him, but continued on her journey after he didn't receive the call. Sena rejects BJP, MNS, to go alone in BMC polls
After separating from the BJP, Uddhav Thackeray rejected MNS' seat adjustment offer. "We will go solo for the civic election," he said. Thackeray said no written proposal had been received from the MNS. However, MNS leader Bala Nadngaonkar said a formal proposal had been sent. After defeats in the last Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, MNS' prospects would have improved with a partnership.
'Chakka jams', protests across Mumbai and Maharashtra
Protesters have blocked roads at various places in Mumbai including Bhandup, Dadar TT and Western Expressway. Demonstrators have demanded reservation, construction of Shivaji Statue in the Arabian Sea, and a review of the Atrocity Act. Transport unions have meanwhile called for a state-wide strike protesting RTO fee hikes. Effect in Mumbai is likely to be negligible, but Pune is expected to be hit.
Activists demand withdrawal of Mumbai-Pune Expressway toll
Activists have threatened to complain against CM Devendra Fadnavis if the toll on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is not revoked in 15 days. Operator IRB Infrastructure had allegedly crossed its 2019 target collection of Rs 2,869 crore, by November 2016. However, an IRB spokesperson said the toll is valid under the prevailing contract. "Assuming that the project's recovery is already done is wrong," he said.
Infosys faces ire of murdered techie's kin
Victim Rasila's family said she had requested for a transfer to Bengaluru from Pune, but wasn't granted permission. They also blamed the company for calling her to work on Sunday, and for not posting a female guard near her in an almost-empty office. She had reportedly complained to the office about the watchman, the murderer, for making "advances", but no action was taken.
Landslide on Pune-Mumbai railway route kills one
A worker was killed and four others injured in a major landslide on the Mumbai-Pune railway route near Monkey Hill. The injured have been taken to a Lonavla hospital for treatment. Around 30 workers were on their lunch break near the Nagnath tunnel when a big rock fell off. Train movement was not disrupted as the track was immediately cleared.
Off-duty nurse saves man dying on roadside
On December 27, Nurse Jayshree Kawdkar of the Lata Mangeshkar Hospital came across an accident victim bleeding on the road near YCCE College. She gave him CPR for 15 minutes as people kept walking by, and took him in a tempo to her hospital. CRPF staffer Krishna Gedam, the victim, was finally discharged last week. Kawdkar has been honoured by Municipal Commissioner Shravan Hardikar.
