Mumbai: Not segregating waste? Prepare to lose power, water supply
Is your housing society segregating the waste as wet and dry? If not, then brace for power cuts and no water for days as Mumbai's civic body Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) threatens such strict action against errant societies. Last year, BMC had warned of disciplinary action if any housing society is found not segregating waste.
Rule applicable to bulk generators of garbage
Since these actions can be taken only if Maharashtra Pollution Control Board approves, BMC will notify them. This rule is applicable to bulk generators of garbage, like housing societies, since most of them produce 100-kilograms of wet waste daily. BMC said since 2007, it has been mandatory for all projects to have composting unit. But people use that space for gardens or parking instead.
'BMC trying to accommodate people's problems, time to cooperate'
BMC had announced that from October, it would stop lifting waste from these bulk generators. Even after extending it to four months, the housing societies continued to flout the rule. "The BMC is trying to understand (people's) problems and are also considering central segregation centers for societies that do not have space," Mehta had said, adding that it is high time people cooperate.
