Mumbai local train's status to be available on Google Maps
The Western Railways (WR) is going to approach Google to link trains with Google Maps which will enable commuters to check live status and position of local trains on the maps. Once finalized, GPS systems will be installed in the motormen's cabins of trains. Separately, WR is also considering to set up servers to determine the trains' positions. Tap in for more from Mumbai.
Maharashtra's first robotic kidney transplant performed with finesse
Mumbai resident CN Murlidharan, who had been on dialysis for past one-and-half years, became Maharashtra's first person to undergo robotic kidney transplant. According to doctors, robotic technology offers lower risk of infection and pain; and enables faster recovery. Murlidharan said, "I was initially reluctant but the doctors convinced me about the benefits. I am happy that I went ahead with it."
Mumbai: Man rapes granddaughter, beats her up
Police arrested 50-year-old man who allegedly raped and assaulted his 18-year-old granddaughter in Badlapur on Saturday. He also beat her up using a stick. The police said, "She was sleeping in the house on Saturday when he came in, locked the door and raped her. The girl approached the police on Monday and we soon arrested her grandfather."
Autopsy report says Mumbai jail inmate died of head injuries
A detailed autopsy report of Byculla prison inmate Manjula Shetye, who allegedly died from a fatal assault by the prison guards, revealed she sustained injuries on her head as well as body. Shetye was allegedly beaten up after she got into an argument with prison officials over shortage of food supplies. The Mumbai Crime Branch will now look into the probe of Shetye's death.
Survey says 50% Mumbai teachers resort to shaming students
A survey conducted by Podar Institute of Education revealed that Mumbai school teachers have resorted to humiliating and shaming students in order to discipline them. Around 48% of teachers said shaming punishments were more effective. However, a senior psychiatrist, Dr Harish Shetty said, "Traumatic experiences can harm a child's self-worth and respect, it will have long-term consequences for the child's personality."
Bombay HC: Need to ensure women's safety at work
With the intention of ensuring women's safety, the Bombay HC directed additional chief secretary to file an affidavit by August 1, stating what actual steps have been taken by the government in order to prevent harassment of women at public places, while commuting by trains/cabs. The judges said, "We are not concerned with what appears on paper, we are concerned with the ground reality."
CBI wants death for Abu Salem, but asks for life-term
The CBI has concluded its arguments on sentencing of gangster Abu Salem and others in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case. "Though he deserves death, I am bound to seek a life sentence," said Deepak Salvi, CBI's special public prosecutor. Salvi also sought lifer for Riyaz Siddiqui, held guilty under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act for abetment of the blasts.
