Heavy rains lash Mumbai for the fourth consecutive day
Mumbai had another round of downpour for the fourth consecutive day that caused huge traffic snarls and train delays for commuters. Trains were 15-20 minutes late. There were traffic jams on the Western Express Highway, causing massive delay in travel time for motorists. The weather bureau has forecasted heavy to very heavy rain till Friday. Loan waiver: Maharashtra to approach Centre to raise Rs. 34,022cr
Four days after declaring a loan waiver of Rs. 34,022 crore, the Maharashtra government is now looking for ways to raise such a massive amount. The state will approach the Central government to direct the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to allow the nationalized banks to lend the amount at 7-7.5% interest rate, with a repayment schedule stretching over four years.
Mumbai:17-year-old swept away by big waves into the sea
17-year-old girl Preeti Krishna Pise, studying at Wilson College, was swept away by a big wave into the sea at Marine Drive on Tuesday. Senior police inspector, Vilas Gangawane, Marine Drive police station, said, "The Marine Drive promenade was crowded and we were constantly making announcements about the high tide." Pise was jumping as the waves lashed the promenade.
Robot-aided bypass surgery makes its comeback after 4 years
A Mumbai hospital performed a robot-aided bypass surgery on a 67-year-old patient, four years after it was discontinued for cardiac procedures in the country for its limited advantage over traditional methods. Burhan Motiwala, a hypertension patient, decided to go for it after he was told that healing would be much faster. Delhi's AIIMS was among the first centres to try the technology for heart-surgeries.
Mumbai: Indrani Mukerjea to be produced before CBI court
Indrani Mukerjea, accused of murdering her daughter Sheena Bora, will be produced before CBI court today. On Tuesday, she had filed an application that says she was beaten up by Byculla prison authorities while she was protesting along with others against the death of an inmate. Mukerjea's lawyer told the court that bruise marks all over her body indicated assault by jail staff.
Mumbai: 2-year-old boy's body found wrapped in a plastic bag
Two-year-old Vivaan Kandu's body was found wrapped in a plastic bag in a chawl in Malad (West) on Tuesday morning. Kandu went missing after he stepped outside with a relative near his house on Monday. His body was found outside that relative's house, who claimed that she had dropped him near his place. Police said he was strangulated. They are questioning Vivaan's relatives.
