Mumbai youth's project could land on the moon
A lunar-related project led by Saumil Vaidya (a former student of Swami Vivekananda International School, Borivali) was one of the winners of TeamIndus's Lab2Moon contest where global students designed and built experiments that could be flown to the moon. The project, called Team EARS (Electrostatics Active Radiation Shield), aims to protect future human settlers from the moon's radiation. Read on for more from Mumbai!
Mumbai East to feature Marine Drive 2.0
The Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) has nearly completed devising a plan that will renovate the land along the eastern waterfront areas of the city. A key feature of this plan is a 7-km long Marine Drive between Mazagaon Docks and Wadala, twice the size of Queen's Necklace in the West. Chairman of MbPT Sanjay Bhatia said the plan would be finalized in 4 months.
Mumbai's LMVs cross one million mark
According to the most recent state economic survey which was conducted till January 2017, the total vehicular population of Mumbai has touched 3 million. Mumbai's two-wheeler population rose by 8.4% from 15.9 lakh bikes and scooters in 2015-16 to 17.2 lakh in 2016-17. Year before last, Mumbai had 9.39 lakh LMVs which increased to 10.27 lakh last year.
Shiv Sena questions BJP on its DCM policy
After BJP appointed two Deputy Chief Ministers (DCM) in UP, Shiv Sena questioned BJP about the lack of a DCM in Maharashtra. According to Sena MP Sanjay Raut, the BJP said it is against their policy to appoint DCMs in any state. Since DCMs were appointed not only in UP but also in J&K, Shiv Sena wants BJP to clarify its stand on it.
Aspiring medical, engineering students no longer have to give CET
As entrance exams for medical and engineering colleges will be based off NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) textbooks, the significance of Maharashtra's HSC syllabus has declined. Aspiring medical and engineering students appearing for Standard XII exams through the state board will have to study both syllabuses (HSC and NCERT). Solar-powered streetlights for Thane's society
Harasiddh Apartments, a housing complex comprised of eight buildings in Thane's Pawar Nagar has streetlights powered by solar energy. After waiting for years for the municipal corporation to install street lights in their colony, the residents sought the local corporator's help, who helped them to install 4 solar panels and 5 street lights. An NGO, 'Thane Christian Welfare Association (TCWA)' also funded the residents.
