Mumbai University changes student name from Kite to 'Patang'
A degree certificate issued by the Mumbai University to a Bachelor of Mass Media (BMM) student by the name of Nikita Kite (pronounced Kee-tay) bears the literal Marathi translation of her surname. The Devanagari script on the certificate reads 'Patang.' The university has stated the erroneous software generating degree certificates. Read on to know what else made news in Mumbai.
Mumbai plans to up its tourism game
The state of Maharashtra will start running houseboats between the waters of Marve-Manori and Gorai. The Gorai Machchimar Sahakari Sanstha has sought permission from the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) to operate houseboats along the creeks of Mumbai's coast. Apart from houseboats, MMB also plans to launch various water sports facilities in Juhu, Versova, Aksa, Marve, Manori, Gorai, Ghodbunder, Bhayandar and Vasai.
Harbour train derailed one day after maintenance check
The derailment of the goods train between Ravli Junction and Kurla on Monday occured one day after its regular weekly maintenance. According to officials, the cause of the accident is suspected to be rail fracture, which can arise due to maintenance issues, normal wear and tear and extreme climatic conditions. Services between CST and Kurla were suspended from 4:10 am to 8:17 pm.
Mumbai's BEST buses might get a new coloe
The Brihanmumbai Electrical Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking, operating the century-old public transport service is currently seeking responses from Mumbaikars to its proposal of changing the bus colours from red to yellow-and-white. This is a part of BEST's plan to renew its services including providing free WiFi inside buses and at bus-stops, real time location of buses and their estimated time of arrival etc.
Bill in favour of bullock-cart races to be tabled
The state government of Maharashtra is going to propose a Bill in the upcoming budget session in favour of bullock-cart races. Bullock-cart races have been banned since 2014 on the order of the Supreme Court. After the ban on Jallikattu in TN was lifted, several organizations and political parties have come forward in support of lifting the ban on bullock-cart races in Maharashtra.
MMRC to gift 25,000 saplings for Project Neighbourhood initiative
25,000 saplings will be distributed by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) among housing societies, hospitals and schools in the vicinity of 27 proposed stations on the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro-3 alignment. This is a part of MMRC's Project Neighbourhood initiative. The Tree Authority, MCGM, identified 1,074 trees that will be cut by the MMRC, in place of which MMRC will transplant 1,727 trees.
HSC Exams begin today
The Higher Secondary Certificate examinations begin today; more than 15 lakh students are appearing for the same across the state. The number of examinees from Mumbai has risen by 6.1% since last year, coming up to approximately 20,000 candidates. More than 150 exam centres have been added to meet the increase in exam candidates and there are also subcentres.
Meat delivery boy sentenced to 7 years in prison
On Monday, a 23-year-old man was sentenced to 7 years in prison by a sessions court in Mumbai for attacking a domestic help and robbing a flat in 2013. Sudeep Sharma was accused of doing so under the pretext of delivering chicken. Sitara Malla, the domestic help, identified the accused and testified against him in court. Sharma was also fined for Rs. 2,000.
