Demonetization could rebound on Modi: Thackeray
Uddhav Thackeray attacked Narendra Modi for his decision to demonetize. Thackeray said that PM Modi had left "people in a lurch" and flown to Japan after "harassing" citizens. Thackeray added that he supported the cause of rooting out black money but demonetization should have been done with adequate planning. He warned BJP of the fall-out of this decision in the next elections.
Fire in south Mumbai building
A residential building in south Mumbai's Abdul Rehman Street caught fire on Friday. The fire was confined to electrical wiring and a pile of plastic on the building's fourth floor. Fire officials rescued nearly 11 people who were stranded on upper floors. Another fire was reported in a godown in Mangaldas market. No injuries or casualties were reported in both fire incidents.
Shiv Sena in trouble over penguin's death
The death of a Humboldt penguin in Byculla zoo has triggered howls of protest against Shiv Sena. Opposition party leader in BMC raised the issue and demanded an FIR against the zoo contractor. The contractor had submitted fake papers to bag the contract to construct penguin enclosures at the zoo. Importing the penguins was one of Shiv Sena's pet projects.
Air quality worsens as temperature dips
Pollution in Mumbai continue to rise, as air quality index rose from 243 to 267, falling under the 'poor' category. According to weather forecasters, pollution levels rose during the night, due to a drop in temperature and calm winds in the city. Santacruz weather station recorded a minimum temperature of 16.4 degree Celsius on Friday, which was the lowest night temperature since 2012.
Grand Shivaji memorial to woo Marathi community
Maharashtra government plans to lay the foundation stone for Shivaji Memorial in the Arabian sea in a grand ceremony. The ceremony will be held in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi; it assumes political significance given the prolonged agitation by the Maratha community. BJP will try to woo the community by celebrating the biggest Maratha icon ahead of the civic polls.
Accident victim's family gets Rs.45 lakh compensation
Parents of a 22-year old techie got Rs.45.09 lakh as compensation pursuant to order of Thane Motor Accident Claims Tribunal. The techie was killed in an accident after being knocked down by a tempo near the Nevali junction in November 2010. The judge held that the tempo driver's negligence killed the victim and the insurance company was liable to pay the compensation.
BMC to take action against schools for flouting RTE
BMC plans to take action against private schools for violating admission rules under Right to Education Act (RTE). Schools were issued notices for not admitting students allotted under RTE quota but Diwali holidays delayed BMC's action. BMC officials said further course of action will be decided when schools reopen. So far only 75 out of 891 students have been admitted under RTE.
