Mumbai: Undertrial, facing murder-charges, commits suicide in Arthur Road jail
An undertrial, facing murder charges, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in central Mumbai's Arthur Road jail. According to police officials, 26-year-old Shabir Ali Garibulla Shaikh had three murder cases registered against him. Mentally ill undertrial used bedsheet to hang himself
Police officers from NM Joshi Marg police station, who are investigating Shaikh's suicide, said that he had attempted suicide on the jail premises even in the past. Jail officials said that Shaikh was mentally ill and was given psychiatric help for the past three and half months. This time, Shaikh used a bedsheet to hang himself in his cell, the officials added.
Case registered, investigations underway
Officials at the jail said that no suicide note was found in his room. It is speculated that he committed suicide around 4 am on Monday. The suicide came to light after one guard spotted his body. Police officials said that a case has been registered regarding the suicide and that further investigation on the matter is underway.
