Mumbai: Use 'push-buttons,' stop traffic at junctions for easy crossing
To ease crossing of busy roads and junctions for pedestrians, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has installed 'push buttons' at major traffic junctions on Wednesday. Pushing the button will activate the pedestrian walk sign, thus letting people crossing junctions without fear. This initiative has been taken under the civic body's walkability project that was discussed in its February budget.
School kids, pregnant women, senior citizens to benefit: NMMC commissioner
The push buttons have been installed at the perennially busy junction near D Mart and Swami Vivekanand Chowk in Kopar Khairane, Purushottam Khedkar chowk, Swami Samarth Chowk in Airoli and on Thane-Belapur road near Mukund Company, near Bharat Bijlee and Rabale junction. Municipal commissioner Ramaswamy N said that this development will particularly help students, their parents, pregnant women, physically challenged persons and senior citizens.
The system installed in all four sides of traffic junctions
The system, to be activated in two days, will be installed in all four sides of the junction. When someone pushes the button, the signal will turn red for vehicles and flash green pedestrian sign enabling smooth crossing. "It will help reduce the hassles faced by residents and also give a boost to our walkability project," added Ramaswamy. Locals, meanwhile, have welcomed this step.
The other cities that have push buttons: Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Delhi
These push buttons, also called Pelican signals, have been installed in many places of India. Hyderabad, Delhi and Chandigarh have Pelican signals at major traffic signals. In January this year, the traffic department of Bengaluru decided to install 60 Pelican signals across the city.
