Mumbai: Metro-1 maintains 98-99% punctuality despite technical failures, says MMOPL
Despite technical failures, punctuality of 98-99% on Mumbai's Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro-1 corridor is being consistently maintained, claimed operator Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL). Line-1 has been facing a lot of issues of late, especially due to technical failures in Chinese rolling stocks. Such failures have nearly doubled in the first half of 2017, compared to the first six months in 2016. Know more!
22 technical failures reported in first half of 2017
Data from the monthly reports by Metro-1 Independent Engineer (IE) show that in 2016, 13 technical failures in the Chinese cars were reported between January and June. The number decreased to 11 between July and December. However, the number of such failures stood at 22 in the first six months of 2017 which is almost double compared to the first half of 2016.
Headlights stop working; trip delayed
The failures in Chinese rolling stocks include, automatic doors failing to open/close, headlights not functioning, leakage in battery-cells, system going into the emergency-mode on its own, etc. On 19 Feb'17, a trip was delayed as both the headlights of the Metro car stopped working. The problem persisted even after resetting; walkway lights were turned on, and the train moved at a reduced speed.
Highest number of technical failures in June 2017
The highest number of rolling stock failures in the period between Jan'16-Jun'17 was recorded in Jun'17 alone. Six technical failures, including non-functional doors, brakes not releasing, trains not moving above 5kmph speed, were witnessed in Jun'17. Ten trips were delayed, and two were canceled. The lowest number of such failures was "one" each in February, March, July, August, and October last year.
Rolling stocks procured from CSR Nanjing
The Metro-1 rolling stocks were supplied by China's M/s. CSR Nanjing Puzhen Rolling Stock Company. Each rolling stock is configured to have four coaches each, which can be extended to 16 rakes in the future. A total of 16 such rolling stocks were procured.
Several other faults reported on Metro-1 corridor
Apart from the rolling stock failures, Metro-1 has been facing several other issues affecting the operations crucial for the Metro corridor. Such problems include non-functional telecommunication systems, signaling failures, faulty escalators and elevators at the stations, and failures of AFC (Automatic Fare Collection) gates. Services have also been hit many times due to birds snapping the overhead power cables of the rolling stocks.
