Utilizing Nirbhaya-Fund, Mumbai-Police to get drones, AI for women's safety
Becoming the first of the eight 'safe cities' earmarked by Centre for utilizing Nirbhaya Fund, Mumbai/mumbai-police'>Mumbai Police have made an elaborate plan to ensure women's safety. Right from installing panic buttons at selected places to controlling drones for surveys, the Rs. 252cr "safe city project for women" encompasses all. The police administration is likely to rope in a project management consultant.
'Push buttons' to be installed after survey of city
Explaining the plan, an official said that panic buttons will be installed after they conduct a survey of the city using geographic information system(GIS). "Areas where crimes against women like rape, molestation, groping or such offences have been reported" will get panic buttons. Once pushed, the button will trigger an alarm in control-rooms, alerting a quick response team which will include personnel on two-wheelers.
'They will be under CCTV cover with panoramic cameras'
"They (push buttons) will be under CCTV cover with panoramic cameras, Artificial Intelligence-like facial recognition software and other video analytical skills that will help transmit information in real-time and enable the patrolling team to move quickly," said a senior police official privy to the plan.
Illuminating dark areas of city will enhance safety of women
The other initiatives to be undertaken under this project are deploying drones at vantage points, illuminating underpasses and foot overbridges. Initially, two drones will be procured, and the fleet would be expanded further. The project also aims to instil "positive behavioral change in police personnel and public" towards the survivors. Outreach programs and workshops would also be held for the masses.

Proposal to be revised after three years: Home department
Out of Rs. 252cr, a lion's share of Rs. 199.45cr will be used for technological advancements. Procuring seven-seater patrol and response vehicle with mounted cameras will be the next area of expenditure. The proposal will be revised after three years. The other seven cities under this scheme will have police working in coordination with civic administration, but in Mumbai, there'll be no such involvement.
