Mumbai: Emergency Helpline for cattle transporters ahead of Bakri Eid
With barely ten days to go for Bakri Eid, the Maharashtra Police started a 24x7 emergency helpline for protecting cattle transporters from cow vigilantes ahead of the festival. Transporters can call on 9503511100/100 for help. A special 24x7 highway patrol control room at South Mumbai's Old Customs House and 27 checkpoints along Maharashtra's borders were set up. Metro-3 line tunneling will damage old buildings, say residents
The news of the tunneling work of Mumbai's Metro-3 (Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ) underground line beginning in October has worried Kalbadevi and Girgaum residents. They say several old buildings, some even 100-150 years old, would be damaged due to tunneling. Five old buildings in Kalbadevi, Chira Bazaar, and Girgaum areas are in an "unsatisfactory" condition. Residents have been requesting authorities to change the corridor's alignment since 2015.
BMC blames Shiv Sena man for building crash
On 25 July, a building crash in the Ghatkopar area had claimed 17 lives. A Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) panel looking into the matter has held responsible Sunil Shitap, the owner of the building's ground-floor flats, for the tragedy. The panel said illegal alterations made by Shitap, who has strong Shiv Sena links, and the over-exposure of the RCC columns have triggered the crash.
Police arrest brother-sister duo for robbery
A brother-sister duo has been arrested by the Amboli police allegedly for stealing an Anti-Terrorism Squad cop's pistol and gold from his Byculla residence. The police recovered a 9mm service pistol and 300gm of gold from the duo, identified as Koparkhairane's Gurpreet Singh and Kamaljeet. The burglary occurred a month ago; the police had set up several teams to search for the accused.
2016 Dongri kidnap, murder: Minor to be tried as adult
In Dec'16, a four-year-old girl, Zumeda Mumtaz Khan, was kidnapped and murdered by two minors in Dongri. The Juvenile Justice Board has now said that one of the two minors can be prosecuted as an adult. The Board said minors aged between 16-18 years, who are accused in cases relating to crimes like murder and rape, can be tried as adults.
Police seize 1kg of drugs from 27-year-old
The Mumbai police have arrested a 27-year-old man, who was found to be in possession of drugs worth Rs. 20 lakh. The arrested man reportedly has a history of drug peddling. The drug peddler was identified as Nadeem Nasir Sheikh, who belongs to the Gaondevi Dongar area of Andheri (West). Police investigations are under way to find his accomplices.
