Mumbai hospitals under the scanner for overcharging
Lilavati Hospital, Asian Heart Institute, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Fortis Hospital, Global Hospitals, Hiranandani Hospital and HN Reliance Foundation were found selling packaged commodities at prices far above the MRP. Cases have been registered against them by the Legal Metrology Organisation. The concerned commodities do not conform to the declarations according to the Legal Metrology Rules, 2011. India's top thieves converge in Thane for friend's wedding
The groom, Toufiq Teji Shah, is wanted in over 25 cases of chain-snatching. He married 15-year-old Sohra Irani. Cops kept a watch but didn't intervene, fearing a serious law and order situation. "We knew the family would use women and children as human shield," said Senior Inspector Ravindra Doifode. Toufiq's arrest in 2012 had led to a large haul of chains and other valuables.
Non-bailable warrant against Vijay Mallya
The CBI obtained a fresh warrant against the businessman, expected to help in having him extradited from the US. The court granted the warrant in view of sufficient evidence against the accused, and since he is absconding. According to the case, Kingfisher failed to repay Rs 1,300 crore to IDBI Bank. IDBI officials were also arrested for flouting norms while extending loans.
Mumbai top cop Rakesh Maria bids farewell
Former Mumbai police chief Rakesh Maria retired on January 31 after 36 years of service. Maria was transferred to head the Home Guards in 2015, in the middle of investigations into the notorious Sheena Bora murder case. However, he bears no ill will. When he was JCP in 2008, he faced flak for being in the control room and not on the field on 26/11.
Maratha agitation fizzles out in Nagpur
While the Maratha protests garnered momentum across the state, only 30-40 people turned up for a blockade near Ganeshpeth central bus station in Nagpur. The protesters ended the programme in 10 minutes. Elsewhere, traffic was severely disrupted in the morning. A similar protest in December 2016 had flopped too, when only thousands turned up in contrast to the expected one lakh agitators.
Nine workers dead after inhaling toxic fumes
Four workers went down to clean a 25-foot deep tank at Kirti Agrovet Ltd, an oil mills company in Latur MIDC, but didn't come out. Five men followed, but they didn't come out either. Police have arrested the company owner and three other officials. The victims' kin alleged delay in rescue. Maharashtra Labour Minister Sambhaji Patil-Nilangekar has promised compensation.
Senior AI pilot in trouble after skipping alcohol tests
An Air India executive director, also a pilot, has been opting out of mandatory breath analyzer tests before operating flights. AI's pilot union body wrote to the DGCA, requesting the investigation of pre-flight medical records and CCTV footage. The letter asked for strict action as even those who unintentionally missed tests were punished. A four-member AI panel is reportedly examining the matter.
