Mumbai man inspired by 'Drishyam' murders his sisters
In a chilling incident, a man from Mumbai planned and executed the murder of his sisters after drawing inspiration from the movie Drishyam. The accused, Ganesh Mohite, had grown tired of financially supporting his two sisters and didn't want to share his ancestral property with them. So he concocted a scheme to eliminate them while implicating another family member. Initially, police suspected that a relative had poisoned the victims, Sneha and Sonali, but they later uncovered Mohite's ruthless plot.
Murder plot involved poisoning instant soup
Local crime branch (LCB) police inspector Balasaheb Khade from Raigad revealed that Mohite took his family to a Navratri celebration on October 15. On the day of the crime, he prepared a soup laced with rat poison for his sisters. After serving the soup, he asked his mother to fetch some water and then stepped out to participate in Garba. Both the sisters succumbed to the poison while being treated at the hospital between October 17 and 20.
How did Mohite mislead the cops?
Following his gruesome crime, Mohite convinced investigators and his mother that a relative had contaminated their water supply, resulting in his sisters' demise. He persistently repeated this narrative, as depicted in Drishyam, until it was widely accepted. Both his mother and Sneha provided statements against the accused relative. However, when the LCB took over the case on October 21, they found CCTV footage proving that no one had tampered with the water supply and began to suspect Mohite.
Police's quest for evidence
Further inquiry revealed 53 search queries related to "poisoning" on Mohite's phone between October 11 and October 14. Additionally, investigators discovered pamphlets about rat poison in his vehicle. Mohite is currently in police custody until October 25. "The accused was fed up of spending on his sisters who were unwilling to get married. He also did not want to share the property with them and hence murdered them," Khade told Hindustan Times.
Other murder inspired by Drishyam
Drishyam is a thriller film that narrates the story of a man who uses manipulation and storytelling to fool law enforcers and hide his crime. Inspired by the movie, two brothers in Pune recently killed their 43-year-old father and burned his body. Police found the victim's body in "farsan bhatti," a furnace used by their father to make snacks. Notably, in the film, the protagonist is seen burying the body in a composite pit.
