Mumbaikars, no respite from sweltering heat anytime soon!
Mumbai sizzled on Monday as it recorded 38.7 degrees-C, a staggering 5.9 degrees above normal. Heat wave was also felt throughout the city, which worsened matters for locals. Temperature was 5 degrees above normal for the weekend as well: Sunday's temperature was 41 degrees while Saturday's hovered around 31-33 degrees. IMD predicts that this burning heat will continue for some time.
Reasons: strong easterly winds, delayed setting in of sea breeze
Explaining the causes, IMD said strong easterly winds and delayed setting in of sea breeze have contributed to the high temperature. Moreover, a high pressure zone has been created over Rajasthan/Gujarat that is bringing dry and warm winds over Mumbai. IMD said that though the maximum temperature will dip from Monday evening, "but are likely to continue appreciably above normal during next 24 hours."
Warning issued, ambulance staff given training to combat hyperthermia
Due to this alarming situation, warnings have been issued and ambulance staff are being given training on combating hyperthermia. Apart from that, you can follow some tips to keep yourself safe. It's better not to venture out in the afternoon, when the sun is at its peak. If you have to, equip yourself with loads of liquids. Also try to avoid dark-colored clothes.
Heat wave to travel across India, to affect Delhi, Kolkata
The heat wave situation will not just affect Mumbai, it will travel across India. The western and northwest areas of the country around Mumbai, Akola, Surat and Rajkot have already recorded temperatures above 40 degrees this weekend. Even Delhi and Kolkata will not be spared.
