    Mumbai stations, that receive over 25,000 footfall, to get escalators

    What's the story

    Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday, during his budget speech, announced that almost all Mumbai Region stations that exceed footfall of more than 25,000 will soon get escalators.

    At the same time, the infrastructure of all suburban stations, including foot over-bridges and escalators, is expected to get a major boost soon.

    The escalators

    Each platform will have at least one escalator: Reports

    According to reports, every station has at least four platforms and each platform will have at least one escalator on an average. An official said, "Cost of each escalator is around Rs. 75-80 lakh. These are high powered ones that can take load of 9000 people per hour."

    The report stated that the Central and Western Railways have already installed more than 45 escalators.

    Redevelopment of 600 major railway stations also announced

    In addition, the finance minister has also announced the redevelopment of 600 major railway stations of the region.

    To enhance the security of the passengers, Jaitley added that CCTV cameras will be installed in all stations and coaches of all suburban local trains.

    All railway stations and trains will also be provided with Wi-Fi facilities.
