For 20 years, man stole cars to replace taxis' parts
A 65-year-old got arrested recently, in a major theft case in Mumbai. Mohammad Kamil Noor Mohammad Ansari ran a taxi business and had been stealing cars to replace parts in his cabs for 20 years. After removing the parts he needed from the stolen cars, Ansari would sell the rest to scrap dealers. 43 cases have been registered against him in the city.
Ansari was into the taxi business for 40 years
Ansari has two residences in Mumbai, one in Nagpada area and the other in Dindoshi, Goregaon (East). He had been in the taxi business for 40 years and owned four cabs. He had drivers riding the cabs in two shifts, during day and night.
'He stole private cars outside buildings using a master key'
Police inspector Dheeraj Koli of the property cell told media, "If any parts were damaged or needed repair in Ansari's taxis, he never bought new ones." "He stole private cars parked outside buildings or in parking areas using a master key. He took the stolen vehicle to an isolated place where he removed the parts he needed," the officer added.
Ansari sold stolen cars to scrap dealers after removing parts
Koli further said that after removing the parts, Ansari sold the cars to scrap dealers. "Cases over the same have been registered against him in Nagpada and several other police stations in western and eastern suburbs," the officer said.
Ansari was arrested after he stole another car from Matunga
Ansari was nabbed last week on charges of stealing a car from Matunga last month. The owner of the stolen car filed a case at Matunga police station and the property cell started an investigation. "As Ansari's name is on record we immediately started looking for him. He was nabbed in Byculla area when he was heading to his Nagpada residence," said Koli.
Ansari was caught before he could sell the stolen car
Ansari had parked the stolen car near his Dindoshi residence and had not sold it to scrap dealers as he was yet to remove its tires and sell them off. His car was then recovered by the team of the force's property cell.
