After Eman, Saifee hospital to start fundraising for obese children
After successfully raising over 21 lakh for the surgery of Eman Ahmed, doctors from Saifee hospital are planning to launch a similar campaign for helping 7 obese children. Graduate from South Mumbai arrested for aiding ISI agents
A day after the arrest of Altaf Qureshi, a Mumbai-based 'hawala' operator who allegedly helped the ISI financially, another hawala operator was arrested from Agripada. Javed Naviwala (26) was arrested in a joint operation conducted by the Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). Both Naviwala and Qureshi dispensed money to ISI operatives in the country.
HC directs Government to map 5-year action plan for malnutrition
On Wednesday, the Bombay High Court directed the State Government to create a blueprint and an action plan of 5 years to abolish malnutrition-related deaths and infant mortality. The core committee of the Government was asked to take recommendations from several NGOs and activists who have been working on-ground. A division bench of justices was hearing numerous PILs regarding malnutrition deaths in tribal regions.
Mumbai dips 19 ranks in National Swachh survey
The Swachh Survekshan 2017, the national swachh survey saw Mumbai falling down 19 ranks to number 29; last year, Mumbai was one of the top ten cleanest cities of India, at rank 10. With Thane ranking 116, Navi Mumbai is the only clean region of the city at rank 8. Other municipal areas like Mira-Bhayander ranked 130 and Vasai-Virar ranked 139.
Uddhav Thackerey's support for GST conditional
On Thursday, Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackerey said the party would stand up against the Goods and Services Tax (GST) if the BMC's financial autonomy is threatened. In a conclave held to discuss GST's financial and administrative ramifications, the Sena Chief told MLAs and MLCs that Sena wouldn't keep quiet if the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's autonomy is weakened.
Nair Hospital's ENT department catches fire
On Thursday afternoon, the ENT department of Nair Hospital caught fire, destroying all medical equipment. The fire didn't cause any casualties and authorities claimed that all medical documents remained unharmed. At approximately 1:15pm, the first floor of the medical college building caught fire and was extinguished only by 3:40 pm. The fire was suspected to have been set off by a short circuit.
