Vasai youth shot dead in Jamaica
25-year-old Vasai youth Rakesh Talreja was shot dead during an armed robbery at his place in Kingston, Jamaica. Parents of Talreja, a Caribbean Jewellers salesperson, were informed of their son's death at 7 pm on February 9. Employees take away part of daily collections to avoid theft at the store. Over 10,000 tax defaulters in Navi Mumbai
Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has identified 10,006 property tax defaulters, whose dues range from Rs 1 lakh to 1 crore. 21 units have been sealed and notices sent to over 1,700 units to pay dues within 48 hours. Some also allegedly avoided tax in nexus with civic officials. Former deputy municipal commissioner Prakash Kulkarni was suspended last year due to irregularities in collection.
Passenger opens emergency exit on flight, booked
A passenger opened the overwing exit of a Chandigarh-bound IndiGo flight before its take-off from Mumbai, injuring a co-passenger. Akshay Mohan opened the door as the flight, scheduled for departure at 11:40 am, was being pushed back from the parking bay. An FIR has been filed against Akshay Mohan under sections 336 and 23(1)(b) for endangering the lives of the passengers.
Major fire at Tata Cancer Hospital in Parel
A major 'Level 3' fire broke out in the basement of the Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital in Parel. The fire brigade received a call around 9 am. Four fire engines and four water tankers were immediately rushed to the spot and rescue operations were started immediately. No casualties have been reported as of now.
Circular for homage to freedom fighters on V-Day withdrawn
Solapur education officer Tanaji Ghadage has withdrawn a circular asking students to pay respect to parents and freedom fighters on February 14, after it triggered a controversy. The circular claimed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev had been martyred on February 14. However, official reports quote March 23 as the date of their martyrdom. Ghadage said they had not realized February 14 was Valentine's Day.
Over 1,300 kilos of plastic bags retrieved in Navi Mumbai
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation confiscated 1,300 kilos of plastic bags from across the city in its biggest haul so far. Over 1,100 kilos were retrieved from NMMC Zone-1 alone. More than 200 shops were raided and fined in CBD Belapur and 80 kilos seized. Moreover, 110 kilos were recovered from Airoli, Digha, Ghansoli, Koparkhairane, Nerul, Turbhe and Vashi. APMC market was another major source.
30 students fall ill after breakfast at hostel
30 minor students of a government school in Shilonda village at Palghar fell ill after consuming breakfast at their hostel on February 9. Five are under observation. The meal had been provided by the Holy Cross Convent Premanjali organization. Four-five students started vomiting before leaving for school, while the others fell sick after reaching school. All were taken to Dayanand Hospital in Talasari.
