Doctor critical after ingesting disinfectant
Ujjwal Ramteke, 27-year old resident doctor at JJ hospital mistakenly consumed a chemical 'formalin' which is used for fumigating operation theatres. Formalin is colourless and was stored in an unlabelled bottle in the doctor's room: Dr. Ramteke drank from the bottle mistaking it for water. The doctor is critical and is currently admitted at Bombay hospital. A detailed investigation at JJ hospital is underway.
Actress Rati Agnihotri booked for electricity theft
Bollywood actress Rati Agnihotri, has been accused of electricity theft by tampering of electricity meters at her Worli seaface residence. Over last three years, the electricity theft has amounted to Rs.47 lakh of losses to the electricity department. An FIR has been registered against Agnihotri and her family. Vigilance team of BEST has been cracking down on electricity-theft in affluent high rises in Mumbai.
75 more WiFi hotspots
After activating over 500 WiFi hotpots in Maharashtra, an additional 75 hotpots have now activated . The WiFi service will be free to access until the end of this month. According to VK Gautam, principal secretary of Technology Department, the target is to activate 1200 WiFi hotspots by May 1, 2017. Government will launch a mobile app to assist citizens in finding WiFi spots.
Ex-SBI chief manager gets jail
Retired chief manager of SBI, VB Mantri, along with directors of a private firm defrauded SBI. 7 people were convicted by CBI court in this case and Mantri, has been sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for creating fake documents to enhance firm's credit limit. Those convicted have been ordered to compensate bank with Rs.10 crore. Mantri has challenged CBI court's conviction in Bombay HC.
Aditya Thackeray meets Governor
Aditya Thackeray met with Maharashtra Governor to discuss vacancies at senior positions in Mumbai University. For the last 17 months, positions of Pro Vice Chancellor and controller of examinations have been lying vacant. Thackeray credited RTI activist Anil Galgali for bringing this issue to his notice. This issue was raised by Thackeray in a morcha recently; he hopes the Governor will resolve these appointments.
Lakes along Eastern Expressway are choked
NGOs and environmentalists have zeroed in on 2 lakes along the Eastern Expressway in Mumbai which are getting choked with garbage, plastic and untreated sewage endangering marine life. Lakes are spread over 10 acres and their water quality has now severely degraded. NGOs have already complained to pollution control board, civic bodies but if there is no concrete resolution, NGOs will initiate legal proceedings.
Shiv Sena halts talks with BJP
Shiv Sena (SS) leaders have halted talks with BJP concerning seat-sharing for upcoming elections. Those in-charge of seat-sharing talks are upset with comments made by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya targeting the Thackeray family. SS leaders have left seat-sharing decisions up to Chief Uddhav Thackeray. Top BJP and SS leaders are keen on an alliance however ground level workers are keen to contest alone.
