Veteran police dog who tracked the Kurla 'rapist-killer' will retire
After 10 long years of service, a veteran 'officer' of the Mumbai Police is all set to retire in a few days time. The officer, a 10-year-old dobermann called Heena, was instrumental in helping the Mumbai Police crack major cases, including the notorious Kurla rape and murder cases. Her retirement ceremony is scheduled for October 31. Here's all about her.
The highlights of Heena's 10 years of service
Heena was inducted into the Mumbai Police's canine squad two months after her birth in January 2008. She was instrumental in tracking down the killers of a senior citizen couple who were killed at their apartment in Khar a few months ago. Heena also played a crucial part in tracking Rehan Qureshi, the notorious Kurla rapist who raped and murdered minor girls in 2010.
The notorious Kurla 'rapist-killer' has 20 odd cases against him
Qureshi, who was apprehended just days back, has some 20 odd criminal cases against him. Among them, 18 are sexual assault cases that took place since 2015. The remaining two pertain to the rape and murder of two minor girls in Kurla in 2010.
Heena will live with her police handlers after retirement
According to sub-inspector Vinod Ballal, the dog master in charge of the Mumbai Police's canine squad, Heena's retirement ceremony is likely to be held at the Dadar police grounds on October 31. After her retirement, Heena will remain with her police handlers, and will continue to live in the premises where she is currently being housed. For now, she is enjoying pre-retirement rest.
Heena will be honored with a coconut and a shawl
"We will salute her for her meritorious service. Heena will be honored with a coconut and a shawl for having served the police force for 10 years," added Ballal, speaking on the upcoming retirement ceremony to be held in Heena's honor.
