Like father, like son: Mumbai duo arrested for 'duping' businessman
A father-son duo was arrested in Mumbai for allegedly duping a city-based businessman and his kin, after promising them flats at cheap rates. Andheri-based businessman Suresh Kothari and his relative were cheated of Rs. 1.15 crore, said Mumbai Police. In the complaint, Kothari said that both of them had deposited money for two flats, but the accused diverted that money elsewhere.
Kothari gave money to book flats, but never got them
"Around six years ago, Kothari was informed that the accused duo were constructing a residential building in Andheri East," said a police officer. Kothari, after checking the plot, deposited Rs. 88 lakh and Rs. 1.22 crore for 1BR flat and a 2BR flat, respectively. They came to know later that the builder never booked a flat for them, instead reinvesting their money elsewhere.
Booking agreement was never done, despite insistence
Kothari had also insisted on registering the flat agreements, which they kept on postponing. "Some of the money was paid in cash, while the rest was paid through bank transactions," said an officer. A case was registered in February after a preliminary probe. The accused, JVPD-based Arun Zaveri (73) and his son Chintan (41), are now in custody, where they are being questioned.
