Mumbai to remain submerged over weekend, to receive 'extremely-heavy' downpour
In what may sound alarm bells for BMC, the IMD has predicted 'extremely heavy' rainfall for Mumbai over the weekend. According to technical classification, rainfall measuring above 204.5mm in 24 hours is termed 'extreme'. The weather department predicts the city may receive heavy downpour during June 9-11 (Saturday through Monday). People have been directed to stay indoors for these three days.
Saturday to Monday, rainfall will have maximum intensity
From today, Goa and South Konkan, which covers Pune, Ratnagiri, Malvan and Vengurla, among others, will see heavy to very heavy rainfall. Tomorrow, the rains will touch upon North Konkan, which includes Mumbai. This situation will last till June 12, said senior IMD official KS Hosalikar. Between Saturday and Monday, rainfall will have maximum intensity. IMD has also issued an advisory about this.
People have been asked to 'abstain from outdoor activities'
The advisory asked people "to abstain from outdoor activities" and "watch for weather updates from Regional Meteorological Centre." Given it's the weekend, Mumbaikars would surely be upset. The city is already experiencing rainfall since yesterday, which has lent a blow to normal life. Central Railway-run local trains were delayed by 20 minutes today, while a Jet Airways flight from London had to be diverted.
BMC's steps: Senior officials' leaves cancelled, NDRF teams ready
Taking a note of the IMD's predictions, BMC has already started taking precautionary steps. It has cancelled leaves of all senior officials during the weekend; they have been asked to be present in their headquarters in Fort area on June 9 and 10. Three NDRF teams will be stationed at Parel, Mankhurd (for eastern suburbs), and Andheri Sports Complex (for western suburbs).
Preparations on keeping flood in mind; emergency services kept standby
BMC officials will be equipped with walkie-talkies and flood rescue-material. Besides, Navy personnel will be deployed in Colaba, Worli, Ghatkopar, Trombay, and Malad. In addition to this, six Flood Rescue Teams of Mumbai Fire Brigade will be posted at the Regional Command Centers. Emergency support functions like BEST (bus transport system), Mumbai Police, traffic police and education officers have also been alerted.
This year's monsoon to be real challenge for BMC
This year's monsoon will pose a real challenge for BMC, as a heavy workload is left concerning road repairs, potholes, broken manholes and clogged drains. Out of 1,878 roads, 584 will just be temporarily covered up till monsoon-end. Potholes will also not be covered up.
