Former Vice-President of tech company loots to fund 'rich' lifestyle
A man in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, who was once a Vice President in a leading tech company, was arrested last week on accounts of car-jacking and chain snatching, along with an accomplice. Cops said the man resorted to acts of robbery after quitting his job due to "family problems," in order to fund his lavish lifestyle. Here are more details.
Man left high-paying job 5 years ago, got extremely stressed
35-year-old Sumit Sengupta quit his job five years ago and at that time he was earning Rs. 2.5L a month. Being jobless and not possessing money to fund his rich lifestyle that he got used to, caused Sengupta a lot of stress; so much so that in 2015, his wife lodged a cruelty case against him. Worsening matters, he's also turned to drugs.
Sengupta snatched woman's chain while riding a stolen car
His ultimate fall came on December 13, when he was arrested along with his accomplice Nitin Agrawal (25), for snatching a woman's chain in Vashi. They made the steal while riding a stolen car and dragged the woman a few feet, before speeding away. Police were able to catch them within 24 hours, due to availability of CCTV footage and based on a tip-off.
Sengupta stole car fooling driver, threatened with 'gun'
The stolen vehicle in which Sengupta and his accomplice carried out the theft was lifted from outside Fortis Hospital in Vashi on December 9. He took away the car after threatening the driver of the vehicle with a 'gun.' Interestingly, cops said Sengupta didn't actually place a real gun to the driver's head, but merely a metal object to scare him.
Police now inquiring for more offenses registered against Sengupta
Notably, there was another case of theft registered against Sengupta in 2017. Police are now inquiring for more offenses registered against him. Sengupta completed his engineering from a Mumbai-based technical institute and used to work at the Pune branch of the company.
