Budget 2017: Cheaper 1BHKs, more PG medical seats
In Budget-2017, Jaitley announced several measures to boost affordable-housing. 1BHKs in suburbs in Mumbai may get cheaper due to 100% tax-exemption on profits from flats of 600sq-ft carpet area. 300sq-ft flats would become cheaper by Rs. 2-3 lakh. Tribal students allegedly tortured in New Panvel school
Eight tribal students of Jai Malhar English School were allegedly scalded with kitchen tools by warden Suvidha Bedde. A complaint had been lodged against Bedde earlier for ill-treatment of students by one of the victims' parents. Bruise marks were seen on their hands and shoulders. All eight have been pulled out of the school. The schools' recognition is likely to be withdrawn.
Fresh security advisory to Pune firms after Infosys employee murder
After Infosys employee Rajila Raju's murder, Pune police are planning fresh security advisories to the 400 IT and ITES firms in the city. Recommendations include installation of CCTV cameras and constant monitoring of feeds, buddy system for females, monitoring of "emotional stability" and health of employees, and more. Police are seeking suggestions from various stakeholders regarding security. Security audits of the firms are likely.
Over 500 people died of AIDS in 2 years
508 people died of AIDS from January 2014 to December 2016 in Nagpur district, says an RTI query, while 2,344 were diagnosed. The query also revealed that out of a grant of Rs 17.11 lakh, Nagpur used only Rs 13.79 lakh. In Wardha, about 90 out of 1,023 diagnosed cases died due to AIDS. Four died in Bhandara and 31 are undergoing treatment.
Over 100 detained for blocking roads
Over 100 Maratha protesters were briefly detained from Dwarka, Adgaon and Sinnar Phata, who had gathered for 'chakka jam'. Warning notices were sent to 200. The blockade affected traffic on the Mumbai Agra and Nashik-Pune highways. 20-25 activists agitated at Dwarka for about 10 minutes, while 1,500 gathered at Adgaon for nearly half an hour. Similar statewide protests demanded reservation in jobs, and more.
Marine biodiversity centre in Navi Mumbai by February end
The Coastal and Marine Biodiversity Centre at Airoli will be opened to the public in February end. A three-hour Airoli-Diva-Airoli boat ride through the mangroves will cost Rs 300 per person in a large boat. Smaller boats will enter smaller creeks and will cost Rs 500 per person. Two 3,000-sq ft buildings will give visitors the opportunity to learn more about Mumbai's marine biodiversity.
Four injured as speeding drunk driver crashes into them
A couple - Kiran Pednekar and his wife Keemaya - and two others were injured when a speeding drunk driver crashed into them in Borivali (East). Accused Mukesh Jain, a Nallasopara cloth merchant, hit a few bikes and autos on Carter Road No 3, a Swift on Road No 2, and then a Maruti Eeco. Locals thrashed Jain before handing him over to police.
