Mumbaikars, you will soon receive real-time updates of disaster-management teams
BMC is planning to equip its disaster management cell with a technology whereby Mumbaikars will be updated about the tentative time the rescue team would take to reach the disaster site. This is being implemented to avoid panic that's usually witnessed in every calamity. BMC has also started preparing for monsoons by upgrading its mobile app and improving the user-interface. Here are the details.
Callers will be updated about the response time
The initiative will be implemented at zero cost as it will be done through state government's online SMS system. The callers will be updated about the response team's movements till the issue is resolved. Senior BMC officials said that since the city's traffic congestion doesn't allow rescue teams to reach on time, it creates panic, which is expected to be tackled through this move.
Monsoon preparedness: BMC improving app, taking other measures
To be better prepared this year to handle water logging in the upcoming monsoon season, BMC is upgrading its app so that people can send photographs of their flooded areas along with location using GIS (Geographic Information System). Some areas in Mumbai are low lying and are more prone to water logging, but if functional de-watering pumps are deployed, the problem can be tackled.
BMC's monsoon plans disappointed Consulate Generals
Last month, Consulate Generals of Netherlands, France, US and others visited BMC's disaster management cell and were reportedly unhappy with its monsoon plans, for which a meeting was organized where suggestions were discussed. The expats also slammed BMC for its shoddy work during 2017 deluge.
