Mumbai rains mess: BMC blames IMD, railways, traffic department
In a report on the aftermath of heavy rains in Mumbai, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has given itself a clean chit, blaming other agencies for the mess created. Citizens criticized BMC for ineffectively dealing with the flood-like situation after Mumbai received 315mm rainfall on 29 August. No alert sounded by IMD: BMC report
BMC's report stated: "The IMD failed to issue a warning well in advance. The Doppler Radar was also not functioning. The radar is used to predict wind direction, velocity, and precipitation, etc. to determine any inclement weather conditions." However, IMD refuted the civic body's claims.
Central Railways blamed for water-logged tracks
Refusing to take responsibility or blame for failing to act, BMC stated IMD didn't issue a warning in advance; IMD officials, however, said they issued an alert to Maharashtra's government and BMC as well. BMC accused Central Railways of not coordinating well to manage the water-logging situation. It has also blamed the disaster cell and traffic department for mismanaging the situation.
Mumbai deluge left 20 people dead
Mumbaikars blamed BMC's lack of preparedness for the rains mess. They criticized BMC's incomplete projects, restructured stormwater drains, ineffectiveness of circuit houses and pumphouses for clearing water-logged places. The torrential rains last month left 20 persons dead and also led to building collapses in Mumbai.
