BEST introduces electric buses in Mumbai
The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) introduced six much-awaited electric buses to its fleet on Friday. These buses intend to reduce pollution, aim to ease congestion and provide better connectivity. These emission-free buses have a capacity of 30 people, cost around Rs. 1.61 crore each and were purchased with financial assistance from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Aaditya Thackeray will inaugurate four buses at Wadala bus depot
Shiv Sena youth leader Aaditya Thackeray inaugurated four of these six buses at the Wadala bus depot on Friday. While electric bus costs more than double the price of regular buses, the bus fare will remain the same as CNG buses.
These buses can run for 200 kms at a stretch
The electric buses need three hours to charge and can go for 200 kms at a stretch. So far, charging points have only been installed at Backbay Depot. These buses run only on electric charge and will help in decreasing air and noise pollution. Moreover, they will also cut fuel costs for the loss-making undertaking.
Mumbai becomes state's second city to go with electric buses
With the launch of electric buses, Mumbai will become the second city in Maharashtra to go with electric buses after Nagpur. Also, Himachal Pradesh has introduced these emission free buses which run between Kullu to Manali, Manali to Rohtang Pass.
