In 2019, Mumbaikars will get BEST app for bus updates
Mumbai-based civic transport body BEST has decided to launch a mobile app next year that will allow commuters to get real-time updates about buses and their schedules. The BEST panel on Tuesday green-lit the initiative taken under Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS). To be launched in January 2019, the app is expected to give out information about the buses plying on a particular route.
GPS chips in bus to determine its exact location
The same information would be on display panels at bus stops to help those who have not downloaded the app. GPS chips in buses will let commuters know its exact location. "We are planning to introduce it after the work order gets issued. It'll take around nine months to develop the system and another three for trials," said Surendra Bagde, GM, BEST.
BMC to fund project worth Rs. 112 crore
Not just passengers, even the BEST management will benefit from this. From keeping track of buses, drivers and conductors, the system will also help in monitoring the WiFi and CCTV cameras on buses. The project of installing ITMS and maintaining it for five years has been given to Bangalore-based Quess Corp Limited at a cost of Rs. 112 crore to be funded by BMC.
400 buses to get GPS chips
BEST has a total of 3,300 buses, of which 400 buses will get the GPS chips. The information about the buses will be displayed at 200 bus stops.
