Padma Bhushan recipient charge-sheeted in cheating case
A charge-sheet has been filed against former World Amateur Billiards Championship and Padma Bhushan winner, Michael Ferriera by the economic offences wing. Ferriera has been accused of being involved in a Rs.425 crore cheating scam by floating a company which lured investors in a fraudulent investment scheme. Film actor Boman Irani's son Danesh, who had stake in the company, bank accounts have been frozen.
Vehicles crash on Mumbai-Pune Expressway leaving 4 dead
Four vehicles, moving from Pune to Mumbai, crashed on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on Tuesday morning near Khalapur, leaving four people dead and four others injured. A trailer heading to Mumbai was hit by another trailer from behind, and to avoid this a tempo steered to extreme left and toppled in the process. A car too overturned on the highway, killing three passengers inside.
BMC withdraws notice of taking back park from citizen's forum
BMC decided to withdraw its notice to the Malabar Hill's Citizen Forum, of taking back the possession of Priyadarshini park. BMC informed the High Court that it will issue a fresh notice citing the violations committed by the forum and will grant a personal hearing to MHCF. MHCF has been accused of constructing facilities in the park and charging for them without BMC's approval.
Teens accused of murdering three-year-old girl to undergo age test
Police have applied to conduct an age test on the two teens arrested for kidnapping and strangling a three-year-old girl to verify if they are actually minors. The girl was strangled with a mobile charger cord on December 5 and ransom was demanded by the accused. School records show that the main accused is 17-years-old but the victim's family has alleged otherwise.
Diamond trader on ED's radar for laundering Rs.700 crore
After raids on bullion traders, Enforcement Directorate has tightened noose on a diamond trader from Opera house. The trader is accused of laundering Rs.700 crore, including Rs.100 crore post demonetization. ED has found that the trader has remitted this money to accounts of shell companies in the name of importing diamonds. Bankers' involvement is also suspected as huge money was sent outside the country.
BJP declares candidates for all 227 BMC seats
In a strong hint of its severed ties, BJP has come out with a list of probable candidates for all 227 BMC seats; leaving no seat for its alliance partner Shiv Sena. Since the 1990s, Shiv Sena had been given majority of seats while BJP contested on 63 seats. BJP demanded an increase in its seat share after its performance in 2014 assembly elections.
New currency notes worth Rs.45lakh seized in Thane
Police raided a Kharghar located firm in Navi Mumbai on Tuesday evening after getting information of illegal currency exchange going in the premises. Police seized Rs.45 lakh in new currency notes of Rs.2000 from the premises. Five persons, involved in exchange of the old currency with new currency for a commission, were detained. Cash has been handed over to the Income Tax department
