Mumbai among world's top 50 cities to visit in 2024
Travel and lifestyle guide Time Out recently unveiled its top 50 global cities for 2024, with New York City snagging the number one spot. The Time Out Index is based on a survey of over 20,000 city dwellers worldwide and the company's network of editors. Factors such as food quality and affordability, culture, nightlife, and overall city vibe were considered.
Top ranking cities
New York City secured the top rank due to its thriving food scene, rich culture, stunning beauty, and content residents. The survey also found that 15% of respondents would like to move to the New York City a.k.a the Big Apple. Cape Town, South Africa came in second on Time Out's list, with every survey participant describing it as "beautiful." The city boasts a lively cultural scene with galleries, studios, public events including the Cape Town Art Fair.
Common traits among top cities
According to Time Out's travel editor Grace Beard, all cities on the list possess a "strong community spirit and an undeniable vibe." The top 20 cities showcase a diverse range of experiences, from New York City's bustling urban life to Cape Town's breathtaking natural beauty and dynamic culture. These cities continue to draw visitors and residents alike, offering unique opportunities for exploration and enjoyment.
Other top cities in the list
The top five cities on the list also feature Berlin (third), London (fourth), and Madrid (fifth). Smaller cities in the top 10 include Liverpool (seventh) and Porto (tenth), with the latter being dubbed a great city for "romance" by survey participants. Time Out commended Berlin for its nightlife, London for its "legendary" pubs and free museums, and Madrid for its "exceptional" dining experiences.
India's presence in the list
The top 50 has just one Indian city - Mumbai at 12th position. "Mumbai is India in a nutshell - from history to modernity, spirituality to sports, a colonial past to a dynamic present - all sprinkled with liberal doses of Bollywood magic and wrapped in the balmy breeze of the Arabian Sea. The city exhilirates with contrasts," Time Out mentions on its website. The places Time Out suggests include Kanheri Caves, local train, and Dadar Flower Market.
