Celebrating World Pharmacist Day and the guardians of medication
September 25 is observed as World Pharmacist Day globally. This day is set aside as a chance to recognize and show support for the struggles faced by healthcare professionals who devote their lives to providing compassionate and understanding care for people. Events are planned all across the world to increase awareness of the importance of pharmacists in society. Let's get into the details.
Who is a pharmacist?
A pharmacist is a healthcare professional who is trained and licensed to prepare, dispense, and provide guidance on the use of medications and pharmaceuticals. Their primary role is to ensure the safe and effective use of medicines by patients.
The decision to observe the day was formulated in 2009
The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) Congress, which was held in Istanbul, Turkey in 2009, is where the concept of designating a day to honor pharmacists on a global scale originated. The FIP Council, which consists of pharmacy leaders from different countries, examined the idea and decided to declare September 25 as World Pharmacists Day and provided a framework for recognizing the efforts of pharmacists.
Each year focuses on different themes
Since 2009, each year has focused on a different pharmacy-related theme, offering a chance to spread awareness of the profession's critical contribution to healthcare and to tackle global health issues. The day has gained popularity over the years, thanks to the active participation of pharmacists, pharmaceutical organizations, and healthcare organizations across the world who partook in events, activities, and campaigns to observe the day.
This year's theme
This year's theme is centered around the idea of "pharmacy strengthening health systems." The goal of the 2023 theme is to draw attention to the significant part that pharmacists have played in determining the course of the world's healthcare systems, particularly in the post-COVID-19 era. It highlights how pharmacists can provide creative solutions to solve the ever-changing healthcare needs of the global community.
FIP's mission ahead
FIP's mission is to support global health by bringing advancement in pharmaceutical practice, sciences and education. According to the FIP's website, the organization is working "to transform practice, science, education and workforce with the FIP Development Goals and aligned resources, supporting national organizations with global policy statements and calling on governments to increase funding for health and improve environments for healthcare professionals."
