World Environment Day: Tips for maintaining sustainable lifestyle at workplace
Sustainability in the workplace can benefit the firm as well as those working there. While donating to environmental causes is well-appreciated, we must also practice these habits if we want to change the world for the better in the future. This World Environment Day let us pledge to embrace a sustainable lifestyle even at our workplaces. Here are some tips.
Avoid using plastic cutlery
Reduce the use of plastic as much as possible in the office. Instead of using plastic or biodegradable items at your office, bring your own non-plastic bottle and coffee mug. By doing this, you will prevent more and more plastic items from ending up in landfills. If you're getting a takeaway, avoid getting plastic bags for the items.
Go digital as much as possible
Wherever possible, reduce your use of paper. Avoid printing out documents that can be read, sent, filled out, or updated online. To save paper waste, try taking notes in a paperless notebook. Additionally, if you have to print something on paper, print it on double-sided or on recycled paper. This can cut down on paper waste by 10-40%.
Use public transport for conveyance
Wherever possible, share rides to work. Use the means of shared cabs, buses, trains, and the like while commuting to work. This lessens carbon emissions, reduces traffic jams, and makes commuting simpler. Similarly, stick to video conferencing as much as possible instead of traveling for a physical meeting. If your meeting is nearby, try walking or bicycling to the location.
Walk some, gain some
Each small step is essential (quite literally). Always be on the lookout for more sustainable ways to do things. Walk as much as you can on the office premises. Avoid taking elevators or escalators until you absolutely have to. Use stairs instead. This can save energy and have a positive impact on your health. Similarly, use a standing desk to create an ergonomic workplace.
Turn off electronic devices when not in use
An important step is to save energy from devices. When not in use, turn off the lights to conserve electricity. Try to use the natural light from windows. Similarly, turn computers, laptops, tablets, etc. off if you are away for a long time. Decreasing the brightness of the screen can reduce the monitor's energy consumption. It will also help reduce your eye strain.
