Wordle for March 30 had 2 answers. Here's why
Created by Josh Wardle and owned by The New York Times, Wordle is a popular web-based word game. The puzzle has a word of the day and players have to reach that word in six guesses, following the green (correct letter, correct place), yellow (correct letter, wrong place), and grey (wrong letter) tile pattern. But puzzle #284 supposedly had two answers!
What happened?
On Wednesday, Wordle had a rare moment: a puzzle with two answers! Since the inception of the game, players have been religiously tackling the daily puzzle, which requires them to correctly guess a five-letter word in six attempts. Once they succeed they share the results on social media. But on Wednesday the results ended with two different words - STOVE and HARRY.
Glitch or intentional?
The game is extremely popular worldwide and has led to family and friend groups on social media where they share the day's answers. But on Wednesday, they were left confused when their answers didn't match. This led to a series of queries regarding the word of the day, prompting people to ask if this was a technical glitch or was it intentional.
NYT later clarified what happened
The New York Times confirmed Wordle had two answers, in a statement to USA TODAY. "In an effort to make the puzzle more accessible, we are reviewing the solutions and removing obscure or potentially insensitive words over time," said Jordan Cohen, the executive director of communications, NYT. So players who reached the word HARRY were actually playing the older version of the game.
What's wrong with HARRY?
As mentioned above, NYT is removing certain words from the original game, and HARRY apparently was a part of the original version. The word means to attack or harass someone persistently. The word was supposedly removed by NYT and replaced with STOVE. The players who don't close their browsers and open the same window the next day reached the word HARRY.
How to reach the new version?
Since your daily performance decides and maintains your streak in the game, people normally fear closing their browsers. But to reach the updated version, it is important that you refresh your browser.
