Kundalini awakening: What it is, benefits, challenges, and more
"Kundalini" refers to a dimension of dormant energy that is yet to be fully awakened to reach its full potential. We all possess a tremendous energy within us that is yet to be unleashed. As humans, we are not absolute entities, but there is always room for improvement and growth. The Kundalini awakening leads us to change our lives to align with it significantly.
What is Kundalini?
Kundalini literally means "coiled snake." In Hinduism, it is believed to be a form of divine energy located at the base of the spine (muladhara). It is said to be a force linked to the divine feminine or the Goddess's formless aspect. When this energy in the body is awakened and fostered, it is said to lead one to attain spiritual freedom.
How it works
Hatha yoga was the first to adopt the name and its practices. It has also found its way into modern spirituality and New Age thinking. Kundalini awakenings can happen in a variety of ways. Several yoga schools emphasize awakening through meditation, pranayama, and mantra chanting. The sensation of an electric current moving up the spine is a popular description of the Kundalini experience.
What happens during Kundalini awakening?
Kundalini is said to rise up from the muladhara chakra through sushumna (the central channel) inside or along the spine, to the top of the head when awakened. Kundalini is thought to move through the chakras, achieving various stages of awakening and mystical experiences until it reaches the Sahasrara, or crown chakra, in the head. Then it produces an incredibly deep shift in awareness.
