What is Galentine's Day? (and how did it begin)
Only a girl understands another girl. There's nothing more pure and beautiful than the bond of friendship free of jealousy or competition, based entirely on love and care for another soul. And to celebrate this very feeling of love and support among women, Galentine's Day has gained popularity in the US over the past decade. It is celebrated on February 13.
Galentine's Day debuted on a TV show
Although Galentine's Day is not an official holiday, there's no denying that the celebration is long due. It all started back in 2010 when Amy Poehler's character Leslie threw an annual Galentine's Day party for her girlfriends in NBC comedy Parks and Recreation. Gradually, the idea of Galentine's Day parties took off in the States and that's how the trend began.
An opportunity to celebrate a bond unlike no other
Catchy phrases like "uteruses before duderuses" and "ovaries before brovaries" from the show remind us that the women in our lives deserve honor and admiration. Despite your current relationship status, your bond with your besties should never be taken for granted. She is your supporter, listener, friend, philosopher, and guide. She's the woman you should throw a party for to acknowledge her efforts.
Make the day all about you and your girlfriends
You can do anything that you and your besties love. Plan an all-gals trip to a place you all can chill at. Do everything that you like and simply celebrate being a woman. Get together for a good old-fashioned movie marathon, or a session to drink, eat, talk, and laugh your heads off. You can splurge on gifts to make your girlfriends feel appreciated.
Who can celebrate?
It's a day meant to celebrate women close to you--they can be your friends, mother, sister, daughter, neighbor, or colleague. However, over the years, the day's celebration has been inclusive of anyone you want to hang out with regardless of their gender. But there's no harm in sticking just to your girlfriends for one day a year.
Pass the Bechdel Test
Take the Bechdel Test for fun and see if you pass it. The test requires two women to hold a conversation about anything other than men. Unlike popular belief, women do not talk to each other just/or mostly about men. Men might find a way into our conversation, but it is surely not based on them. Let us know how you scored!
