Are you guilty of cultural appropriation? Let's discuss
In today's world, we tend to tread carefully in the realm of political correctness. Although well-intentioned, it is a complex and ever-changing landscape. Striking a balance between respecting diversity and safeguarding freedom of expression challenges us daily. Cultural appropriation is one such concept that's a little tricky to understand, which leaves people struggling to draw the line between appropriation and appreciation.
What is cultural appropriation?
Cultural appropriation is when elements from one culture are adopted or used by someone from another culture without seeking permission or giving proper credit. These elements can include language, art, history, literature, clothing, customs, religion, holidays, and more. The issue arises when these elements are used disrespectfully or without understanding their cultural significance, potentially causing harm to the source culture.
Let's understand it with an example
The phiran is a traditional garment worn by both men and women in Kashmir, especially during the cold winter months. It has a distinct design and carries cultural and historical importance for the local people. However, if you wear it merely as a fashionable outfit, enchanted by its beauty, without recognizing its deeper cultural meaning, you may unintentionally engage in cultural appropriation.
What harm does cultural appropriation do?
Every culture is unique and has more to it than just clothes and ornaments. When people take things from a culture without understanding their true meaning, it demeans and trivializes the traditions and customs that hold deep value for the community, reducing them to mere fashion trends or commodities. This can also lead to wrong ideas and misunderstandings about the culture.
Is it actually a thing or an academic jargon?
There's a counterview to cultural appropriation. According to this perspective, there's nothing wrong with individuals from culture X engaging in practices from culture Y. In fact, it should be encouraged! Often, we don't fully comprehend the complexities of many things that are in our culture, yet we continue to do so. That doesn't imply insensitivity or that we shouldn't engage in practicing them.
Travelers often unwittingly indulge in cultural appropriation
Exploring and appreciating the local culture while traveling is not inherently cultural appropriation. It becomes an issue when travelers or individuals from outside the culture adopt elements without proper context, turning them into superficial trends or commodities, and disregarding the cultural significance behind them. So, while the term "cultural appropriation" may be an academic concept, the concern it addresses is relevant and important.
How to avoid cultural appropriation as a traveler?
Educate yourself about the history and traditions of the places you visit. Seek permission and guidance from locals before participating in cultural activities or wearing traditional attire. Avoid using or replicating sacred symbols, and refrain from stereotypes or generalizations about the culture. Support local artisans by purchasing authentic souvenirs. Be respectful in photography, always seeking permission before taking photos of people or cultural practices.
