The Old Prison
Tucked away on the Maltese island of Gozo, The Old Prison is over 500 years old and what makes it an offbeat place to visit is the centuries-old graffiti made by the prisoners. A wall in the prison even reads "Kilroy was here," and yes, we are talking about the 16th century! Goosebumps, much? Make sure to check the timings before you go.
Secret passage in St. Gregory's
St. Gregory is an ancient church that was built back in the late 1430s. However, during the 1960s, locals discovered a secret passage inside it and what they saw shook them. Inside was a shoe sole, a few coins, some pottery pieces, a chainmail armor, and a mammoth heap of human bones! Legends have it that people were buried alive in this passage.
Valletta Tunnels
This place is a centuries-old, forgotten underworld that lies beneath Malta and speaks volumes about its history. Valletta Tunnels were used for protection and were constructed back in the 1500s as a part of the country's defense during the Great Siege of Malta. Later, they even became an ideal place to store food and water. Today, you can take a walk through history here.
Ghar Dalam Cave
This is the perfect place for history buffs. Ghar Dalam Cave is the oldest site in Malta where archaeologists have found remains and bones of several animals including those of dwarf elephants and giant swans. Even evidence of human settlement dating back 7,400 years has been discovered! All these rare findings have been displayed in a museum attached to this eerie cave.
