Monsoon season alert: How to prevent water-borne diseases
The monsoon season is here, bringing relief from the scorching heat that we all endured in the past few months. However, along with monsoon comes an increase in the risk of water-borne diseases. These diseases caused by contaminated water can lead to many health problems. Thus, it is important to take some preventive measures in order to steer clear of them.
Wash hands frequently
Something that we all learned from the COVID-19 pandemic is to wash hands regularly to stay away from infections. Continue the practice during this monsoon season too- especially after using the toilet, before eating, and after you come in contact with dirty or contaminated surfaces. As per experts, you need to wash your hands with soap for a minimum of 20 seconds.
Drink clean water
Make sure the water you drink is clean and silt-free. If not, then get it filtered. Only pure, nutrient-rich water from a water purifier or other potable source should be consumed. Get filters, RO systems, and other water purification apparatus repaired and maintained regularly. Ensure that the water you are storing is pure or sterilized.
Ensure that your food is clean
Fruits and vegetables should be thoroughly washed in clean water before consumption. For further safety, wash the vegetables/soak them in a diluted vinegar solution. Similarly, remember to wash your hands properly before and after preparing the food. Make sure to clean the serving pieces thoroughly too. Experts advise avoiding cooking if you have any symptoms of water-borne disease.
Keep your surroundings clean
Ensure that the area is tidy and devoid of standing water. Remove any flooded places or containers that could serve as mosquito and other disease-carrying bug breeding grounds. Stay away from areas with standing water or that are flooded. Do not stroll or swim in this water. Such water might be polluted and dangerous to your health.
Be cautious
Educate yourself about different water-borne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and hepatitis A. Consult healthcare professionals if you have symptoms of any of these ailments. If you are residing in a high-risk area, then get vaccinations or boosters for water-borne diseases after consulting a doctor. Besides that, apply mosquito repellents or use mosquito nets to protect yourself from mosquito bites.
