Winter wellness hacks for children
As the frosty grip of winter draws near, parents often face the challenge of safeguarding their children against the seasonal onslaught of colds, flu, and various other ailments. Empowered with the right strategies parents can make winter a healthier time for kids. Dr. Sharath Babu, MBBS, MD, Pediatrics, Apollo Cradle and Children's Hospital, Chennai shares some tips to boost children's immunity during the season.
Ensure proper nutrition
A well-balanced diet plays a crucial role in strengthening the immune system. Make sure your child is well-hydrated during the season. "Incorporating plenty of vitamin C-rich fruits, vegetables, whole grains and protein-rich foods along with zinc from sources like nuts and legumes can aid in immune function," says Dr. Babu. Consider supplementing your child's diet with vitamins after consulting with a pediatrician or nutritionist.
Follow hygiene practices
According Dr. Babu, one of the simple and effective ways to prevent the spread of infections is through regular handwashing. Teach your kids the importance of washing their hands thoroughly, especially after playing outdoors or touching shared surfaces. "Encourage children to wash their hands with soap and water frequently, especially before meals, after using the bathroom and after being in public places," he suggests.
Bundle up for the weather
Proper clothing is essential to protect your kids from the cold. "Layering clothes can help regulate body temperature and prevent illnesses associated with exposure to low temperatures. Ensure they wear hats, gloves, scarves and insulated footwear when heading outdoors," says the doctor. Further, apply moisturizers and lip balm to protect their skin from the harsh effects of cold winds and indoor heating.
Keep them active
Despite the cold weather, it is essential to keep children active, says the expert. "Regular physical activity not only helps maintain a healthy weight but also strengthens their immune system. Indoor activities like dancing, yoga, or indoor sports keep them active and energetic during the winter months," Dr. Babu explains. Along with physical activities, getting adequate sleep is also essential for their well-being.
Monitor them
Be vigilant for any signs of illness in your children, such as fever, persistent cough or difficulty breathing. "Early intervention and consulting a medical expert can help manage illnesses more effectively," he says. Furthermore, consult with a pediatrician to ensure the child's vaccinations are up-to-date. Vaccines provide crucial protection against various contagious diseases, reducing the severity of symptoms and the risk of complications.
